Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood, PS5 Review
Cyanide Werewolf offers us: The Apocalypse an action game with role-playing dyes in which it highlights the three types of its main lycanthrope character.
The trajectory of Cyanide studios there are many points in common with the points of his fellow Irishmen from Spider, and his work too. This consists of a good handful of sports simulators on disciplines not as common as football or basketball – cycling, rugby- and adventures with enjoyable titles, even far from reaching the highest levels. Of Orcs and Men and its by – products with Styx. We are talking about games with very good ideas expressed in a way that is not entirely correct because, presumably, a budget that is not at all close to a large production budget, which we could talk to without fear of being wrong about ambition beyond its possibilities. However, Cyanide had to make that leap in a quality that Spiders guessed with the Technomancer, and ended up getting Greedfall, to position itself as one of the European studios to be included in the years small ahead. Did you manage to come Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood?
Their plot base is quite attractive, as part of the role-playing universe of World of Darkness, to which the classic also belongs Vampire: The Masquerade and Vampire: The Masquerade 2, which will be released in a few months. Meanwhile, here we are in the near future where man will end up disastrously on the planet, portrayed by Gaia here, with corporations like Endron driving the nails into his chest, to top it off. These corporations are only servants of a more powerful force, the Wyrm, which was a balancing force but is loosened and corrupted today. To avoid the debacle, as we can imagine, our main character, Cahal, will be in charge, who has a personality that undoubtedly leads to Werewolf ‘s attraction: The Apocalypse – Earthblood: he’ s a wolf.
Technical part … which generation exactly?
Therefore, in the construction and design of your life we face the first negative point, which is that it is difficult to understand how to Mound – Cahal and his group, who suffer an attack at the start of the game – are on their way to various Endron facilities just a few meters away. In some ways, it is as if that sanctuary is completely surrounded along its borders by the enemy, which could easily be solved with a kind of quick journey instead of a short walk until we reach the destination point of our mission.
This decision would be relatively achievable if they had a different design and an excellent level of detail, when he said enemy facilities, but that is not the case, and we will walk through corridors and rooms for the dozen hours it will take us to finish it, they practically feel like a copy and paste to each other. We can say something similar about the enemies, which will be repeated and little will come of the private soldier, heavy soldier and mecha model, which cannot be said to act as minions, but these are the ones that are sure to add more binding.
Before we talked about Tumulus. This does the work in a relaxed place that we’ve seen in many other titles and that serves other purposes, though in this case we won’t do much more than start conversations. This is one of the characteristics of the human aspect of Cahal, and in this place there is dialogue with other colleagues who, as well as resorting to the missions that are part of the game, can offer us some conversation, but with very possibilities limited, with few options to choose from, and given the feeling that we will choose the one we choose, the consequences will be the same, or if they are different, they are completely irrelevant in the future.
As a result of these last features we spoke to there is almost no R in ARPG, and a shallow skill tree needs to be added that will not lead to an experiment just because we will understand in a few hours the most useful skills and in which it is worth investing spiritual points, which are the ones that allow you to improve all of them. That said, and since R is not … is the A convincing?
Cahal can come in three different forms, which also translates to three very different ways of playing, it has to be said, and this is a good idea from Cyanide. As a person we have already seen that the possibilities in the Mound are scarce, although we are lucky, when we take action, even though they are not too diverse. First of all, it must be made clear that stealth is always the best option, since the combat is sometimes in high demand, due to the difficulty of the game itself and other less positive aspects. But let’s go back to the art of noticing, and this is the most appropriate thing to do in the form of Lupus (wolf), as we are obviously shorter, and can go through ventilation ducts also in a mechanism that we already know more than enough in this type of games. Lupus can approach enemies and destroy them, although he will temporarily form the human form Cahal, who can also use a crossbow to account for an enemy in the distance.
When we enter a particular room, it is necessary to stop to look: the hidden possibilities, the doors that we can sabotage so that reinforcements do not fall for fear of ugly things, the routines of the enemies, use the Umbral Vision to detect anything that might escape us … But, once we act, it gives the feeling that there is only one right way to reach our destination, and that we are to achieve success based on on efforts and that trial and error that is what prevails, more than the freedom and ingenuity of the player.
That said, it’s not hard to end the thing in killing, in fact, most likely. It is then that Cahal takes the form of Crinos, the werewolf beast, and releases his anger that will inevitably be the victims of his most common enemies. These will only be ants to trample for this form of our main character, though you’ll have to dig a little deeper if you want to chase other more complex competitors, like those modified humans or the mecha.
For this we can use attack buttons – light and strong-, link combos, and most importantly, switch between the two types Crinos, Agile and Mole. As we can imagine, the first one is useful when the number of enemies on the screen is high – and not particularly powerful – allowing us to finish them quickly and then move on to Mole, which contains Crinos slower but also stronger, perfect for leaving the strongest competitors in the end. There is also the possibility of activating the Frenzy, a state in which Crinos goes into a complete rage and kills machine, although it is clearly very limited in time.
In short, the fight feels agile in general, but often we suffer, in many ways, from problems with the camera, which, unfortunately, does not cure being able to fix the enemies. In short, it is certainly not perfect at all, the most satisfying part of the whole episode, since despite its limitations at a technical level, it is not at the design level, which is not the case with the stealth or role elements.
And this height, as we have seen, is not too high. It’s hard to dig, in mid-2021 and with consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X already on the market, a technical, especially visual department, like Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood. There are things we’ve already talked about, such as the small details of the settings, which are also transferred to the characters and some facial expressions – if they have any – some in certain conversational moments, along with really poor textures. Fortunately, there are salvageable features, and the fact is that the Cahal model in any of its three well-detailed forms, and a surprising performance in the hair of its animal forms – Lupus and Crinos – for the general line of the game . Apart from this, on a sound level it does not stand out badly or much less, and with an acceptable soundtrack we need to add some interpretations to the voices that, from true professionals or stars of the sector, must be expressed, they are worth enough so as not to attract negative attention.
Nacon Spain provided us with a press copy of the game to develop this Review.
With this, the jump in Cyanide quality will still have to wait, and they don’t seem to get it with a game that wants to cover so many features, but with another with more specific attributes like Styx: Master of Shadows. sequence. Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood wants to cover too many suits and beat too few without being a bad game, at least one that can’t be enjoyed. As usual for this French study, good ideas are given, but perhaps the appropriate thing is to gradually translate them all at once into one video game and wait halfway through. As we said in the text, the technical part is bad at this point, but it can be saved, the more play could say the same thing, and at the magazine level it can start from interesting basis: the problem is not the game itself, but the amount of titles on the market that make things similar, but better. By the way, much better.
THE BEST _____
- An argument tells a potentially interesting story.
- A certain playfulness arises in all three forms of the main character.
- Fighting can be rewarding, though it is far from perfect.
- Technically it doesn’t seem to be this year, but from the beginning of the last generation (PS4, Xbox One).
- Stealth leaves the feeling that there is more trial and error than the skill and ingenuity of the player.
- Any aspect of role-playing is reduced to ostracism: very little depth in this sense.
- Incomprehensible, incoherent global design.
It’s not the latest or the most original, it doesn’t have the best execution either, but it could be fun if you like the genre. Good, but there is room for improvement.
